Seahouses and Bamburgh Castle

A map of a bicycle route incorporating Bamburgh Castle

Bamburgh Castle in Northumberland is the centrepiece of this ride in the stunning Northumberland coastal area. Northumberland is famed for its beautiful scenery and quiet country lanes, and this ride has both in abundance. Throw in a historic castle, along with a museum, and there’s plenty to keep you occupied for the entire day. Refreshment stops in the second half are few and far between, so make sure you fuel up before leaving Belford.

Route Description

After leaving the start at Chathill railway station, turn left onto the B1340. From here, the ride then takes a north-easterly, straight-line route through to the coastal village of Beadnell. At Beadnell, the B3140 turns north and runs parallel to the coastline before arriving in the small town of Seahouses
In the centre of Seahouses, the route then takes a quick right-left along Main Street and Seafield Road to reconnect with the B1340 to start its run into Bamburgh.

From Seahouses, the ride then continues to hug the coastline as it passes Seahouses Beach before turning slightly inland to enter Bamburgh village itself. For a small village, Bamburgh has an awful lot to do, so a stop off to explore the local attractions such as the Castle, Windmill and Grace Darling museum is thoroughly recommended.
Shortly after leaving Bamburgh via the B1342, the route hits its first short, sharp climb as it travels through to Budle and on to Waren Mill.

From Warren Mill, the route finally leaves the coastal road as it travels through Easington. From here it then crosses the A1 as it climbs into Belford. Following a short stretch through the High Street, the route turns eastwards again and re-crosses the A1 and drops down through Outchester and on to the outskirts of Spindlestone. After passing Spindlestone, it’s a generally flat run south down towards Bradford.

Continuing its flat aspect, the route now runs around the edge of Newham Bog nature reserve and on to the village of Newham. Still sticking to quiet lanes and farm access roads, the ride climbs south through Ellingham before passing Tyneley Cottages and turning sharp left towards Doxford.
With the end of the ride in sight now, the route turns north about half a mile after leaving Doxford as it runs gradually downhill back into the start at Chathill station
