Nantwich and Beeston Castle

The small town of Nantwich in Cheshire provides the starting point for this scenic route out to Beeston Castle and back. The route takes a gentle but steady climb out to the castle, with the resulting return leg being generally downhill. The Castle at Beeston is well worth stopping at, where the views from the top allow the visitor to see seven different counties.

Route Description

After leaving Nantwich station, the route wiggles through Waterlode, Welsh Row, and Queens Drive before crossing the Shropshire Union Canal as it leaves the town. Shortly after leaving town, the ride turns off the main road to weave through some quiet country lanes as it passes through Swanley and on to Gradeley Green. From Gradeley Green, the route then heads north, crossing the A534 at Brindley before picking up Brindley Hall Road for the long flat run to Bunbury.

From Bunbury, the route now takes a turn to run through Bunbury Heath and then on to the loop around Beeston Castle itself. After leaving the castle, the route then takes on the only real climb of the ride as it starts its return south. Passing through Peckforton, the peak at Gallantry Bank is soon reached.

After cresting the peak at Gallantry Bank the long downhill back to the start begins. From here the route skirts the edge of Cholmondeley Castle Gardens and soon crosses the A49. Once over the A49 its a short ride in to the village of Wrenbury.

After passing through Wrenbury the route continues eastwards for about three miles before turning north just after Broomhall Green. From here the ride passes through Austerson and then continues north in to the outskirts of Nantwich and then back to the start at Nantwich railway station.
