CL_Route_30_Yorton_and_Telford

Yorton in Shropshire is the start point for this route. On the whole, comprising quiet lanes with only a couple of testing hills this route provides a very pleasant day out in the country. At thirty-seven miles, this is one of our longer routes, however there are plenty of small villages to explore and country pubs and cafes to rest and refuel at.

Route Description

From the train station in Yorton the route takes Station Road and subsequently climbs out to the village of Clive. After cresting the hill its a downhill run to meet the A49 at Preston Brockhurst. Turning right on to the A49 it’s a short stretch along this busy road before turning left on to Besford. Following the B5063 south for a mile or so before turning toward Stanton Upon Hine Heath. Following this, a weave through the village and its a long flat run along Moreton View and Hazles Road, pausing only to cross the A53.

After a lef,t-right dog leg to cross the A443, the route then loops around Little Bolas and Great Bolas. From Bolas the route then turns south, continuing through the lanes and fields. After skirting Cherrington and continuing south to Kynnersley. From here it’s a short run in to the outskirts of Telford. From Telford, the ride now picks up National Cycle Network Route No 81 as it climbs in to Wrockwardine. Continuing west along NCN 81, it’s a downhill run on to the village of Charlton before turning north again.

Shortly after crossing the River Tern the ride now leaves NCN 81 as it winds through quiet and narrow lanes to Rodington Heath. After leaving Roddington Heath the last climb of the day starts as the route passes Somerwood and crosses the B5062. Looping around Shrewsbury the route eventually passes through the villages of Upper Astley, Astley and Astley Lodge. Following this its a straight run back up the start point in Yorton.
